Having been bitten by the boat building bug a few years ago, I've found this to be an enjoyable and unique hobby that results in something that is not only fully functional, but has an artistic quality that makes it extra special. In other words, people notice.
And, probably contrary to first thought, these wood strip water craft are light-weight and durable, and without the need of fancy tools or equipment to build them. What you do need however, is patience and some good background music!
Being relatively new to this craft, I will build from a set of plans that have already been designed according to certain technical specifications and then go about customizing the boat with my wood choices and other features. I like the flexibility of hunting for a variety of wood choices and cutting the strips myself (and getting covered in sawdust - ha!)
Basically, the plans consist of a template of forms to be cut out of plywood or MDF board, and once cut are placed along a spine (or strongback). The forms, being placed about 1 ft. apart, ultimately provide the shape of the kayak or canoe when the wood strips are attached to each form, row by row.
To gloss things over a little bit (figuratively and literally), after the wood strips are attached, and a wee (hee hee) bit of sanding is done, there is a fiberglass shell put on the outside and inside of the craft. This gives it the strength and water tight seal needed for this light-weight construction. The result is a clear shell that allows the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. And once the forms are removed, and a few other details taken care of, the entire boat is finished with several coats of marine varnish.
For a matter of reference, this type of construction takes about 400-500 hours to make "Art on Water". But it's time that seems to fly by, except for the occasional splinter or two (probably closer to three!).
If you have any questions about my boat building, please feel free to ask. Thank you for visiting and I hope you enjoy my little nod to quiet times on quiet waters.
